Research

The Research Department at NIBD is at the forefront of advancing the field of haematology and oncology through innovative research and clinical trials. Our department is dedicated to improving patient outcomes by discovering new therapies, understanding disease mechanisms, and developing tailored diagnostic tools. We are committed to fostering a culture of scientific excellence, collaboration, and translational research that bridges the gap between laboratory discoveries and clinical applications.

1. Basic and Translational Research

Our basic and translational research focuses on understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying haematological disorders and cancers. Key areas include:

  • Molecular Genetics and Genomics: Investigating genetic mutations and alterations that contribute to the development and progression of blood disorders and cancers.
  • Cell Signalling Pathways: Studying the pathways that regulate cell growth, differentiation, and apoptosis in haematological diseases.
  • Stem Cell Biology: Researching the properties of haematopoietic stem cells and their role in bone marrow transplantation and regenerative medicine.

2. Clinical Research

The Clinical Research division is dedicated to translating laboratory findings into new treatments and therapies for patients.

  • Patient Outcomes and Quality of Life Studies: Assessing the impact of new treatments on patient health, quality of life, and long-term outcomes.

3. Epidemiology and Population Health

Our epidemiology research focuses on understanding the distribution and determinants of haematological diseases in different populations. Key areas include:

  • Disease Surveillance: Monitoring the incidence and prevalence of blood disorders and cancers.
  • Risk Factor Analysis: Identifying genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that contribute to the risk of developing haematological diseases.
  • Health Disparities: Investigating disparities in disease outcomes and access to care among different demographic groups.

4. Innovative Therapies

We are committed to discovering new therapeutic agents and treatment modalities. Key areas include:

  • Targeted Therapies: Developing drugs that specifically target molecular abnormalities in cancer cells.
  • Immunotherapy: Exploring the use of immune system-based treatments, including CAR-T cell therapy and checkpoint inhibitors, to combat haematological malignancies.

Collaborative Research Initiatives

The Research Department at NIBD collaborates with leading academic institutions, pharmaceutical companies, and international research organisations to accelerate the pace of scientific discovery. Key initiatives include:

  • Consortium Memberships: Participation in national and international research consortia to share data, resources, and expertise.
  • Partnerships with Industry: Collaborations with biotech and pharmaceutical companies to develop and test new therapies.
  • Academic Collaborations: Joint research projects with universities and research institutes to leverage complementary strengths and expertise.

Research Infrastructure and Resources

NIBD provides a good infrastructure to support research, including:

  • State-Laboratories: Equipped with advanced technologies for molecular biology, cytogenetics, flow cytometry, genomics, proteomics, and cell biology research.
  • Clinical Research Unit: Dedicated facilities for conducting clinical trials, including patient care areas and research staff.
  • Biorepository: A comprehensive biobank that stores patient samples and data for use in research studies.
  • Data Management and Analytics: Advanced data management systems and bioinformatics tools to analyse and interpret complex datasets.

Training and Development

The Research Department is also committed to training the next generation of scientists and clinicians through:

  • Fellowships and Scholarships: Offering opportunities for postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and medical residents to engage in research projects.
  • Workshops and Seminars: Regular educational events to disseminate the latest research findings and promote knowledge exchange.
  • Mentorship Programs: Providing guidance and support for early-career researchers to develop their skills and advance their careers.

Impact and Achievements

Our research efforts have led to significant advancements in the understanding and treatment of haematological diseases. Notable achievements include:

  • Breakthrough Discoveries: Identifying novel genetic mutations and molecular targets for therapy.
  • Clinical Innovations: Developing new diagnostic tools and therapeutic approaches that have been adopted into clinical practice.
  • Publications and Presentations: Contributing to the scientific community through high-impact publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at major conferences.

At NIBD’s Research Department, our mission is to push the boundaries of science to improve the lives of patients with blood diseases and cancers. Through our dedicated research efforts, we aim to discover new treatments, enhance patient care, and ultimately find cures for challenging conditions.
